Multiple Vision

Trombone, Piano, and Conga (one player)
Completed: 10/14/2008; Premiered: 10/17/2008

This work, in four short movements, is for one player who simultaneously plays trombone, piano, and conga drum.

The city of Huntsville, Alabama, is famous for two things:

  • High-tech NASA and military connections
  • Jokes about engineers

One theme of these jokes deals with the engineer who has tunnel vision about what he is doing, making him completely oblivious to the non-engineering world.  Certainly, we all know some engineers who fit this stereotype – we may have even worked for some – but we also know engineers who do not have this tunnel vision.  This piece is dedicated to one of the most broad-minded engineers (or people) I have ever met – a true “Renaissance man”:  Dr. Jorge Auñón.

The choice of having one player perform on three instruments at once is meant to reflect this ability to focus on more than one issue at a time.

Recorded at University of Alabama in Huntsville on October 17, 2008.
